If you’ve been living in a cave since Christopher Columbus, you probably won’t know that the sweet potato is a bright orange root vegetable, and is treated in a similar way to butternut squash, parsnips, swede and turnips. Now you do.

Sweet potatoes are also very nutritious, with all sorts of goodness such as thiamine (which unlocks carbs and lets us use them for energy), potassium (good for your heart and cholesterol levels), manganese (good for nutrient absorption, production of digestive enzymes, bone development and immune-system defences), and vitamin C (good at pretty much everything, from helping cure the common cold to helping maintain connective tissue, bones, blood vessels, and skin).

Sweet potato, unlike the boring, ordinary potato, counts as one of you 5-a-day, because it is lower in starch and other carbohydrates. Too much starch in your diet is similar to too much sugar, which can lead to high blood sugar levels and things like type 2 diabetes. Okay, that is a worst-case scenario, but better safe than sorry!
Obviously sweet potato is a vegan/veggie friendly food, and can easily be part of your main meal, for example sweet potato burgers, bakes, soups, or many more. Oh, and hands up who's tried sweet potato sandwiches? Well you should, they're delicious!

If you’ve never cooked with sweet potato before, you’ll be blown away by how versatile it is! you can mash them, bake them, make fries with them, top a fish pie with them, pretty much anything you can do with a white potato. You can even eat them raw, something that can’t be said for the white potatoes!
Now we mention it, it doesn’t get easier than taking them out of your freezer and popping them straight into the oven, which you can do with our brand new sweet potato wedges…
